Where is Cyprus in Europe? Is it part of Greece? Find a map of Cyprus and its geographical location here.
As you can see on the map below, the island of Cyprus is located in the far eastern corner of the Mediterranean sea, around 80km south of Turkey, southeast of Crete and the Greek mainland, north of Egypt, northwest of Israel and west of Syria and Lebanon.

As Greek is the main language in the Republic of Cyprus, many people wrongly believe that Cyprus is a Greek island. But Cyprus is a completely separate country and has been a member of the EU since 2004.
It's the third largest island in the Med after Sicily and Sardinia and, while geographically Cyprus can be considered part of Asia due to its proximity to the Middle East, culturally and politically it is very much a part of Europe, with most visitors travelling to the island from Northern Europe , especially the UK and Germany.
As Cyprus is geographically closer to the Middle East than the rest of Europe, it enjoys a far better climate than the likes of the Canary islands or the Balearics off the coast of Spain.
It does take longer to get here by plane than say Spain or the Greek islands with flights from the UK taking 4 to 4.5 hours and flights from central Europe from around 3 to 3.5 hours....
Tip: Find the best deals fast on low cost flights to Cyprus from anywhere in the world.
...But making the effort to come to Cyprus right now in 2023 is well worth it.

See my page on our breathtaking trip to Jordan, how to get to Jordan from Cyprus and how best to enjoy the must-see sites of Petra and Wadi Rum.
Jordan, Israel and the Lebanon are only 40 minutes from Paphos or Larnaca by plane.
