SALAMIS

by ROSETTA PAUL
(Florida ,USA)

I am planning a religious trip to Salamis, birthplace and home of Barnabas, missionary companion to the Apostle Paul. Also, both men would sail to Salamis to kick off their missionary journeys each time. I have in mind a retreat kind of stay from 6 weeks to 3 months.

1. Is there a campsite in the Salamis area?
If yes,is it safe for a lady? What amenities does it have? Is it open year round?
2.Is there a monastery hostel in Salamis?
3.Can I find a reasonable bungalow to rent or even a room in an apartment close to the beach. My price range is about 300 US dollars monthly.
4.Give your advice concerning the whole venture.
Sincerely
Rosetta Paul

Salamis in Northern Cyprus
by: Helen

Salamis is located in the (illegal and only recognized by Turkey) TRNC - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

I'm not aware of any campsites nearby (the ruins are about 6km north of now deserted Famagusta) but there are hotels like the Salamis Bay Conti Hotel - a large hotel and probably not what you are looking for.

An alternative option may be to stay in the beautiful unspoilt Karpas peninsula (called the "pan handle" as it's the long bit that sticks out at the top of Turkish controlled Cyprus as you look at the map). It is a car drive away from Salamis but not that long and you would be in a rural "retreat" far from the madding crowds! There are several good hotels with cheap rooms in the area and the Turtle beach area has bungalows and a campsite - rent a tent or pitch your own!
