Mosquitos in Cyprus

by Ann Ingram

We are staying in Polis in May 2012 - this will be our first time to Cyprus. Can I expect to be eaten alive by mosquitos in Cyprus? Whenever we go to Greek islands, Zante & Kefalonia I have to seek medical attention for the extreme reaction I have to insect bites - any useful advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

Insects in Cyprus
by: Helen

Some people are more susceptible to insect bites than others and we do get them in Cyprus. They are not really mosquitos but a variety of bugs, the most common of which is what we call "no see-ums" as they are virtually invisible, bite with a sharp sting, but don't leave any red marks.

My friend always seems to get bitten at the start of summer in May or June and her bites often form red welts, but I usually only suffer with a few bites. So I guess if you are prone to bugs, you'd best come armed with lots of insect repellent.

I can only recommend what I use to keep the bugs at bay, available to buy from the chemists in Polis, which is a roll-on insect cream called Mosquito Milk in a green box. It's more expensive than the cheaper sprays but it works and lasts a long time as the sprays seem to waste a lot and you also get it all over your hands!
