Visit one of my favourite Cyprus restaurants Laona taverna in old Paphos for authentic home-cooked Cypriot food at a great price.
Laona Tavern and Chris the owner
This delightful little Cyprus restaurant - Laona, is in the heart of the old town of Paphos. Run by Chris, Koulla and son Andreas, it's a traditional family-run Cypriot taverna serving mouthwatering freshly cooked Cypriot food, just as you would find in a Cypriot home.
Tucked away in a tiny side street, the taverna is frequented by lots of workers who go there for the great food and the incredible value for money. If the locals regularly use a restaurant, it's always a good sign in my opinion.
Al and I have been going to Laona's for years, almost every time we go to Paphos in fact; it's a fabulous place for lunch! In March 2013, Chris gave the taverna a complete facelift, adding posh new toilets and a smart new kitchen. But fear not, the interior retains it's rustic charm despite the fresh paint and lovely wooden fittings.
The restaurant is very popular with ex pats and the boards outside are adorned with enthusiastic magazine reviews from far and wide, including glowing recommendations from Trip Advisor where the taverna was recently voted one of the top 10% restaurants in the world!
Al fresco dining at Laona
The taverna is something of a best kept secret as it's tucked away down a small side street off Makarios avenue. But please persevere if you are struggling to find one of our favourite Cyprus restaurants Laona.
Everything on the menu is traditional Cypriot cuisine, bought and cooked fresh that morning. Nothing costs more than 9.00. What a bargain!
I love all the home-cooked dishes, but our favourites are probably the rabbit stifado and the lamb with beans.
Tip: The most popular dishes often sell out quickly, so turn up before 13.00, even better by 12.30 if you want to be sure of the dish of your choice.
We always make sure there is time for a stop at THIS Cyprus restaurants - Laona, whenever we are in Paphos for the day!
