Traditional Cypriot Tavernas
You may have read my page detailing some of the best Cypriot restaurants to try in the Paphos area and also where to submit your own suggestions on where to go for an authentic Cypriot meal.
While updating that page yesterday in the context of more gloomy stories about the economic crisis gripping Europe and the rest of the world, I thought I would share some tips on where to go for tasty but also great value food.
While I still believe most of the best tavernas in Cyprus are to be found in mountain villages, I had a fantastic lunch the other day in the big bad city of Limassol.
With an hour for lunch, we headed for the old quarter where there are plenty of restaurants and a new street of trendy cafe bistro bars.
Proton 1 - fantastic value
While the trendy cafe bars looked inviting, a first glance at the menu showed a Cypriot coffee priced at a whopping 4.50. While a slight premium on the village price of 80 cents for the same coffee was to be expected, with coffee at such a crazy price, we quickly moved on from that restaurant!
A few metres round the corner opposite the old fort, we spotted a board advertising chicken souvlaki (kebab) for just 2.00. Thinking the price was too good to be true, we sat down on simple but colourful chairs at this simplest of tavernas bang in the middle of the old quarter and looked at the tiny menu, hand-written on a wooden board.
We ordered melitzanasalata (aubergine dip), a rocket salad, a couple of chicken souvlakia and a bottle of water. The salad was delicious with real parmesan cheese and baby tomatoes plus balsamic vinegar; the home-made dip was excellent with the accompanying mini pitta breads and the chicken kebab was perfectly cooked and came with oregano spiced home-made potato wedges.
And the bill? Just 14! This little gem is called Proton 1 and the telephone number is 25351919.
Tip: Don't be put off by the fact that Proton is actually a takeaway grill place. Their advertising board says "Try it. It's worth it" and we did! The best Cypriot tavernas don't have to look trendy to serve great nosh at a great price.
I'll be adding more Cypriot tavernas that offer fantastic value for money as well as great food as I'm now on a mission to share the best value eateries on the island.
In the meantime, if you have a favourite taverna you'd like to share with me and other visitors to the site, tell us about it here.Related Pages:
