Car hire in Cyprus in May 2012

Would I be better off booking car hire before I come out or trying to strike a deal while I am there, I will be staying in the Larnaca region.

I hoped to travel the whole island but after reading some of the posts on here it seems there will be a problem driving in to the northern areas, can anyone help.

Thanks

Cyprus car hire best price

It's hard to say as it partly depends on when you are visiting Cyprus. If it's low season (Nov to early March) you will probably get a better deal on the island as there are lots of cars available.

In high summer however, there are often insufficient cars to service demand, so you would be better to pre-book, especially if you want extras/specials like air con, 4 doors rather than a hatchback, 4x4 etc.

Touring the whole of Cyprus by hire car

You will find it difficult if not impossible to find a car hire company that will let you use the car on both sides of the island - certainly you won't find one via the major hire companies usually pre-booked by most people.

You won't be covered for insurance when you cross the border and, while some people risk it, if you have an accident you will be in trouble with your car hire company who aren't covered the other side of the border, plus if you break-down (often due to wheel problems on pot-hole laden roads!), you will face a hefty charge to get someone in the North to tow you to the border - your car hire company will NOT come across to rescue you!

If you like to live dangerously, hire a car when you get here and take the risk, though I personally would not recommend it. Instead, drive to the border, leave your car there, cross on foot and arrange for a hire car company based in the NORTH to deliver a car to you there - some will pick you up for a small fee and drive you to Kyrenia to do the paperwork and pick up your car.
